Every year on July 15, countries around the world observe World Youth Skills Day, a reminder that the future isn’t built by ideas alone, but by the skills we help young people develop today.
This year marked 10 years since the United Nations first declared the day, and the 2025 theme was especially relevant: Youth Empowerment for Sustainability and Innovation: Developing Green and Digital Skills.
It’s a big title. but at its heart is a simple question: are we preparing young people for the world they’re about to inherit?

A Day of Reflection and Connection
To mark the occasion, we spent the day with students and faculty at Jalpaiguri Government Polytechnic College, where ideas around learning, technology, and the future already echo through the classrooms.
Mr. Kaustuv Dutta, the Principal of the college, joined us as a guest speaker. His message was both practical and inspiring: technical institutions need to do more than teach; they need to connect. With local needs, with communities, with organisations on the ground. That’s how skill-building becomes real.
He spoke about the importance of keeping education close to lived realities. Because when students can see how their skills apply to the world around them, learning becomes a tool.
