Ensuring Eye Health in Rural Communities

Access to regular health services remains a critical challenge in rural India. Limited availability of medical facilities, long travel distances, and lack of awareness often mean that minor health issues go undetected, potentially leading to long-term complications. Eye health, in particular, is closely linked to education, as children with undiagnosed vision problems may struggle to keep up in classrooms.

Reaching Underserved Communities in Bengal

Northern Bengal has long struggled with limited access to specialised health services. Surveys such as NFHS-5 show that a significant share of rural households in the region are unable to obtain routine care, and vision-related problems are among the least addressed. In many villages, children continue their schooling with undiagnosed sight issues, while adults often live with preventable conditions that restrict their livelihoods.

To bridge this gap, Parinaama Development Foundation, in collaboration with Lion’s Club Siliguri, has begun hosting medical interventions in the area. By bringing services to people’s doorsteps, these efforts aim to reduce health inequities and create opportunities for education and economic participation.

Eye Camp Conducted on 24th September

On 24th September, a well-organised eye camp provided essential vision care to 62 members of the local community. The camp was supported by the expertise of Mr. Pratap Biswas and Dr. Mohammad Anjam, who carried out detailed eye examinations, vision tests, and screenings for common conditions.  The participants included students from the Foundation Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) program, alongside people from neighboring families and households.

The camp’s structure allowed each participant to undergo a thorough eye examination, including vision tests and screenings for common eye conditions. By integrating health services into community programs, the initiative ensured maximum participation and awareness. During the examinations, a few students from the FLN program were found to have minor eye issues. Early identification and treatment can prevent deterioration of vision and improve the students learning experiences, reinforcing the critical link between health and education.

Promoting Preventive Care and Community Awareness

Beyond treating immediate medical needs, the camp served an educational purpose, raising awareness about the importance of eye care. Community members were advised on maintaining good eye health, the need for regular check-ups, and recognising early signs of vision problems. Such initiatives underscore the broader significance of preventive health care in rural areas, where proactive measures can reduce the burden of avoidable conditions and enhance overall quality of life.

Your support can help organise many other preventive care programs for rural areas.
